Nintendo Switch 2 release date

The Nintendo Switch 2 was officially revealed on the 16th January 2025. On 2nd April 2025 during their Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo provided a more in-depth look at the Switch 2 and confirmed that it will launch on 5th June 2025.

Nintendo has also planned a series of Switch 2 Experience events worldwide this spring, kicking off in New York and Paris on 4 April and wrapping up in Seoul on 1 June.

Nintendo Switch 2 features & design

The original Switch, launched in 2017, revolutionised gaming with its seamless transition between handheld, tabletop, and TV modes. With over 146 million units sold, it remains Nintendo’s most successful home console. The Switch 2 builds upon this winning formula, refining the experience with key enhancements.

Bigger and better display

One of the most noticeable upgrades is the larger screen, providing an even more immersive gaming experience in handheld and tabletop modes. While the exact size remains under wraps, we’ll keep you posted as soon as details emerge.

To support this larger display, the kickstand has been redesigned to span the entire width of the console, offering improved stability and adjustability for the perfect viewing angle.

Magnetic Joy-Con controllers

The Joy-Con controllers have been given a size boost for better comfort – great news for those with larger hands! But the most exciting change is that the traditional rail attachment system has been replaced with a magnetic snap-on mechanism, making it easier than ever to detach and reattach the controllers.

The Switch 2 also features new controller functionality that allows the controllers to be used a little like a computer mouse. Plus, a new button on the controller is dedicated to Nintendo’s new in-game chat feature.

Backwards compatibility

Good news for current Switch owners – the Switch 2 will support both new exclusive titles and existing Nintendo Switch games, in physical and digital formats. However, Nintendo has hinted that some titles may not be fully compatible. More details will be shared in due course.

Nintendo Switch Online members can also continue their subscriptions seamlessly on the new console.

Dual USB-C ports

A welcome addition to the Switch 2 is the presence of two USB-C ports, with one located on the top of the console. This could allow for easier accessory connectivity, though further details on its functionality are yet to be confirmed.

Nintendo Switch 2 game lineup

The first-look trailer gave fans a sneak peek at what appears to be the much-anticipated successor to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. We even spotted a redesigned Donkey Kong and an unfamiliar race track, fuelling speculation about new features – could we be looking at 24-player races?

Additionally, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has been confirmed. Originally announced at E3 2017, the game resurfaced during Nintendo Direct in June 2024. Plus, thanks to backwards compatibility, a host of upcoming Nintendo Switch games set for 2025 should be playable on the new console. We expect even more announcements in the 2nd April Nintendo Direct presentation.
