The daffodils are starting to bloom, and although the sun hasn’t fully broken out, all signs point to spring on the horizon, which means spring cleaning season is almost here! From the Lunar New Year to Jewish Passover, the tradition of spring cleaning is an ancient one that exists in cultures across the world.

Why do we spring clean?

In some countries, like China, spring cleaning is all about getting rid of the previous year’s bad luck and misfortune. In Ireland, we’re less about the fresh starts and more about decluttering and organisation. We recently surveyed the Irish public and 57% chose this as their main motivation to do a full spring clean. While it’s immensely satisfying task to tick off your list, only 4% of people do it just for fun and just shy of 9% do it when there’s motivation i.e. people visiting their home.

What are the worst rooms to clean?

It comes as no surprise that 60% of people dread giving their bathroom a deep clean. From cleaning out drains to brightening up tile grout, the bathroom is a particularly labour-intensive room to clean.

Coming in second place at 43% is the kitchen. Whether you’re cleaning counter and cabinets or small and large appliances, the amount of things to deep clean in a kitchen seem never-ending once you put your marigolds on.

A smarter way to clean

While our showers, toilets and sinks can’t clean themselves, we can invest in kitchen appliances that make cleaning a little bit easier. Cleaning the oven is easily the most laboursome kitchen appliance as grease and grime can be very stubborn to remove. In our survey, 34% of people would love self-cleaning kitchen appliances.

99% of us would invest in cleaning tech to make cleaning speedier and 33% us are easily influenced into buying cleaning gadgets after seeing them online. Steam mops can tackle stubborn paw prints on your floors, while a good fan can keep you warm or cold and some can even purify the air in your home. Robot vacuums make vacuuming a breeze as you can set, forget, and enjoy consistently clean floors. There is so much tech big and small that can make your spring clean a little less of a chore.

In fact, 44% of people called a cordless vacuum ‘the ultimate cleaning essential’. More of us are investing in our cleaning tech with 27% embracing robot cleaners, 51% ditching wires for a cordless vacuum and 29% upgrading to a steam mop.
