Coffee Buying Guide - Espresso Coffee

Espresso Coffee Machines

Espresso machines provide great flexibility, letting you get creative in your quest for the perfect crema. Espresso machines use widely available pre-ground coffee, or you can grind your coffee to the coarseness you require using a grinder (see coffee accessories). You’ll feel like a barista as you carefully pack the coffee into the tamper before creating beautifully intense espressos, lungos or ristrettos.

Many of our espresso machines come with a milk frother that lets you make milky coffee drinks. By mixing milk with steam and air, you’ll be able to produce a luxurious froth.

Espresso machines look the part with contemporary controls, cup warmers and adjustable cup stands. Although espresso machines require more work than automatic pod machines, it’s all worth it when you master the art and create the ultimate cup of coffee.

Why choose an espresso machine?

  • Perfect for connoisseurs who want to perfect the art of coffee making.

  • The steam arm allows you to craft a delicious steamed milk-froth for cappuccinos and lattes.

  • Professional and practical features such as cup warmers and drip trays.

  • Key Features

A built in pump forces water through the coffee.

Steam wand to create frothy milk toppings for lattes and cappuccinos.

Drip trays keep any spills contained and can easily be removed for cleaning.

    Features to look out for

    Bar Pressure

Having the correct bar pressure is crucial for extracting the best flavour from your coffee. Between 9 and 15 bars is the perfect pressure for full-flavoured coffee with a professional crema.

Machines with thermoblock heating systems are incredibly fast and efficient. Thermoblock machines heat the water to the optimum temperature for making coffee - around 90-95 degrees - so that the coffee beans don’t burn and leave behind a bitter taste.

The filter is where you put your ground coffee. It usually sits in a handle-shaped holder and has very small holes for the coffee to pass through.

Some coffee machines come with a built-in a tamper. This small device helps you pack ground coffee into the filter so that water passes through at the right speed. This is a fine art in itself - pack it too tightly and the water takes too long, not tightly enough and water passes through too quickly.

Crema is a telltale sign of a professionally made espresso and appears as a thick golden froth on the top of your coffee. A crema is created as tiny air bubbles trap the flavoursome coffee oils extracted from ground beans.

    Steam Arm

Espresso machines with a steam arm will allow you to create a range of milky coffee drinks including cappuccinos, lattes and macchiatos. By mixing together steam, air and milk you’ll be able to provide a wider range of drinks for friends and family.
